Citrus Lemon (Lemon Tree) - Spain
Lemon, scientifically known as Citrus ×limon, is a small tree or spreading bush of the rue family (Rutaceae) and its edible fruit. The tree has a spreading, upright growth habit, few large branches and stiff thorns. Lemon juice is a characteristic ingredient in many pastries and desserts, such as tarts and the traditional American lemon meringue pie. The fruit is oval with a pronounced nipple at one end and has a tough, leathery rind. The pulp is acidic and juicy, varying in color depending on the cultivar from clear to pale yellow. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids that work against infections like the flu and colds. They are also used in aromatherapy for their refreshing scent.
Create the ideal environment: Lemon trees thrive in warm, temperate climates. If you live in an area that experiences at least 8 hours of sunlight daily year-round and that never drops below 41 to 44 °F (5 to 7 °C), you can plant your lemon tree outdoors in the ground. If you live in a colder climate, grow your lemon tree indoors during the colder months. Harvest and prune: Once your tree is 2 to 3 years old, you should be able to harvest anywhere from 10 to 30 lemons every year! Pick lemons once they are firm and 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) in size. Prune your lemon tree from time to time if you find it’s getting unruly or too large.
