Lagerstroemia indica, commonly known as crape myrtle, is an upright, wide-spreading, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or small tree in the loosestrife family. It typically grows to 15-25’ tallThe plant is native to southern China, Southeast Asia, and northern Australia.

The bark of the tree is thin and about 2mm thick, smooth, pinkish-gray and mottled, shedding each year. The leaves are dark green and oval-shaped with a pointed tip. They turn yellow-orange in the fall before dropping off. The flowers are produced from summer to autumn in showy, conical panicles up to 20cm long. They come in white, pink or purple colors.

Please note that crape myrtle is a popular ornamental plant and is often used in landscaping.

Here are some step-by-step instructions for taking care of Lagerstroemia indica:

    1. Light: This plant prefers full sun to partial shade. It needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive.

    2. Soil: Use well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and sand works well.

    3. Water: Water the plant deeply once a week during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce watering to once every two weeks during the fall and winter months.

    4. Temperature and Humidity: Lagerstroemia indica prefers warm temperatures between 60 and 85°F (15-29°C). It can tolerate lower temperatures but may drop its leaves if exposed to cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

    5. Fertilizer: Feed the plant with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding to once a month during the fall and winter months.

    6. Pruning: Prune the plant in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Remove any dead or diseased wood, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other.

    7. Propagation: Propagate by taking hardwood cuttings in the autumn.
